A test system based on the virtual instrument is developed for measuring the mechanical characteristics of the linear ultrasonic motors . An experimental setup is designed and constructed to measure the output force and the speed. It can provide the load for the linear motor to be tested. The pressure sensor and the linear optical encoder are used to measure the output force and the speed of the motor, respectively. A test hardware platform is built using virtual instrument technology. In order to achieve the function of each module, software design is implemented using the virtual instrument programming language LabVIEW. The performances of the rod-shaped linear ultrasonic motor and the V-shaped linear ultrasonic motor using two bar-type vibrators of variable cross-section are measured using the test system. Experimental results show that the test system is practical. The present work provides a necessary condition for mechanical characteristic measurements of the linear ultrasonic motors.
